Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Special broadcast of The G-Hole to air on MTV this week featuring Grandma's review of Final Fantasy XII

While getting our ass kicked by Guitar Hero II, we discovered that Grandma will once again be gracing your television screens when her review of FFXII appears on MTV's The G-Hole, in an episode that is scheduled to first air Wednesday, November 15th at 8:00pm EST. During the broadcast, we will hold a live discussion thread here at OGHC, giving you the chance to bullshit with Grandma the whole night as the episode crosses the continent, one time zone after another.

We were going to stay up anyway!

Here are the scheduled air dates if anyone without a DVR wants to catch it on either MTV or MTV2:

MTV-
Wednesday 11/15/2006 8:00pm
Thursday 11/16/2006 10:00am
Thursday 11/16/2006 12:40am

MTV2-
Wednesday 11/15/2006 09:00pm
Wednesday 11/15/2006 02:00am
Thursday 11/16/2006 12:00pm
Thursday 11/16/2006 09:30pm
Friday 11/17/2006 12:30pm
Friday 11/17/2006 10:30pm
Saturday 11/18/2006 09:00pm
Saturday 11/18/2006 01:30am
Sunday 11/19/2006 03:30am

A lot of folks really worked hard to make the show work (well, not Grandma and I- really she just plays the games and god knows what the fuck I do), so please, PLEASE let us know what you think! Please join us Wednesday night for the discussion thread, it should be pretty interesting after we I start drinking.

Please tell us you'll be here, this means a lot to us, even if just to stop by that night and to say "hi."

Success of the show means Grandma and I keep working; if Grandma keeps working then she gets more money; if she gets more money then she can afford the new consoles (we're poor); if she can afford the new consoles then she'll be happy; if Grandma's happy then I can sleep at night. It all works out in the end :)

Game on!

Holy freaking crap, OGHC on actual broadcast television!

*logs into tivo.com and schedules recording right now*

While I seriously doubt I'll be able to change my own grandmother into an OGHC-caliber gamer, I did show her Brain Age when I visited a couple weeks ago. I suspected she was just playing it to humor me -- but a few days later we hadn't been discussing video games at all and she asked me if she could try it again. She got her brain age down from 80 to 76, but I know she can do better because she was still having problems with the word "blue" and with handwriting recognition. "Grandma, remember, say 'bloooo' -- there, see?"

(Since I seem to be the family's "technology ambassador" I'm pretty sure it'll fall to me to get her a DS lite and Brain Age for Christmas.)

I'm happy to see I'm still on OGHC's Xbox Live friend list. (My gamer tag: Michael Spencer) Now that she's a TV star and all, I hope I don't get bumped off her list to make room for all her new friends. ;-)

Wow! Fantastic! I wish I knew when that particular episode was being aired in Aus, so that I could watch it live too. Guess I'll have to settle for watching the G-Hole episode on the 'net.

And with any luck, I'll be able to join in the live discussion thread too - I've always missed out in the past.

    Game on!

    Love, Jen

Well, anonymous, what I'm saying is that we ARE waiting to get the consoles. We can't afford them right now! I'd love to get her one for Christmas or just get the house one for all of us but the truth is we're flat broke. Grandma's not complaining, this is as it has always been up to being on the show. "Poor" is not the inability to buy video games, when I say we're poor, I mean paying the bills and making sure we have groceries each week is hard as hell; bill collectors calling about the endless medical bills and school loans, etc.,. I appreciate what you're saying about a fixed income, but I think you don't realize WHY I appreciate it :) And that's an honest answer.

And I'm not plastered all the time (can't afford it!) hell, I'm not even plastered some of the time. It's a rarity I can go out and get a tiny bottle of jager (Grandma doesn't drink) But I do drink in celebration, or to forget what a shitty little life I have (the common use of alcohol).

Look- we're not going to call Nintendo, or Sony, or MTV and tell them to send Grandma a Wii and a PS3. That's not how it works! I wouldn't do that, and I know Grandma would certainly be feel embarassed to do something like that; we'd feel greedy.

You are right in saying that there are people older that game; there are DEFINITELY a LOT of people older than Grandma that play, and many of them are probably better than her, too. Grandma is my favorite because she's my Grandma. That's why she's special. That's it. She doesn't think she deserves _anything_ for free! I think she deserves the world- because she's my grandma.

That's all it comes down to :)

Come on!! This is a big day for her! Why spoil it? Have some fun with us Wednesday night! :)

    Michael Spencer-

Dude- she's not going to delete you from the friends list. Hell she recognizes your name when it comes up, it's the easiest gamertag to remember! And YES if it weren't for the handwriting recognition issues, I think BrainAge would be so much easier to pick up for a lot of older folks. After a bit of practice, though- she'll be proud of herself.

    Jen-

Grandma wants to know if you got her last letter yet :)

dont get me wrong im happy for her. does she not have insurence that will pay for her medical bills or is it the crappy insurence that the rest of us disabled or elderly get. the medicade medicare that the damn government constantly screws with.

  • At 9:58 AM, Blogger CtrlAltDelete said…

Oh, it's the crappy kind; worse even nowadays because of the "prescription drug card" companies that try to pass off as legitimate federally backed programs. It's the same old song and dance it seems; if something's wrong, she calls her doctor (who told her to call in the first place) who, instead of making an appointment sends her to the ER, which isn't always covered, and you know what that's like- they take the same tests over and over again, send her to a specialist that isn't covered, and give her medication that isn't always the right stuff.

Medicade and Medicare are constantly a topic of worry in our house, and just like everybody else, there's not a damn thing we can do about it!

It's the one subject about which politicians are most vocal and yet know the least. They say they'll fix it, but really- no one knows how.

    Hey Grandma (and Tim!)

The last letter I got was postmarked Oct 04. So if you sent anything after that date, I haven't received it yet. (Now that I've said that, I'll probably receive it in a couple of days time, because that's how these things seem to work.) I always adore getting a letter from Grandma and I'm glad she doesn't mind if I write her my long-winded letters too. :-)

    greetings Grandma and Tim,

cool, I look forward to hearing what Grandma will say about the game I can't forget that and there is something about the consoles on MSNBC at 9 EST so a lot of gaming stuff to watch (since I don't watch that much TV now).

lol thinking of the consoles i took my fiancee to work this morning at bestbuy and there was already ppl lined up in front of the store, can we say desperate i mean i can see them doing it for the wii because nintendo products dont have issues when they come out but, sony on the other hand, they make their systems poorly for some reason i know weve had to fix our ps2 twice, hopefully the ps3 is different.
