Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Video 17 - Grandma Plays Okami

Grandma is in the final stages of Okami, a beautiful platform game on the PS2 that was well deserving of its drawn out hype. The unique "Brush System" in the game is both beautifully done and incredibly frustrating at times; the new strokes one learns begin to layer themselves in such a way that one occasionally forgets the easiest way of battle in favor of newer methods, or at least those most recent in memory which tend to be the more complicated drawings.

Drawing using the thumbsticks isn't as easy as you'd hope it would be, so it takes some getting used to- but it's worth it. The saturation of color and form make the game, which functionally holds up on its own in gameplay, a true work of art- but you've probably already gathered that from over two years of E3 demos and teasers.

For Grandma, the worst aspect of the game would be the very "StarFox-esque" gibberish anima language that drums on your head during dialogue reading. It's a shame, really- the soundtrack is rather pretty, but sitting at the computer a few feet from where Grandma tortures herself trying to learn a new brush stroke is usually done in silence (other than Grandma's exclamations of course).

If you have a Playstation 2 and you dig the platform genre, you should own Okami.

That brings me to the other reason you shouldn't eat anything this week:

Grandma got her copy a few weeks ago when Square sent it over to be reviewed for The G-Hole. She violated one of her standing gaming rules by interrupting Okami to play FF:XII so the review would be ready by deadline, but there are no regrets when it comes to this game.

Simply this: FINAL FANTASY IS AWESOME AGAIN.

There is so much to say about XII but goddamit it will have to wait.

If there is any gas in your car; if your bus pass for November just kicked in; if you have the necessary funds to acquire it- GET IT.

It's magnificent.

We have a lot coming up, including our perspective on The Lumines Situation and the upcoming holiday battle of corporate entities.

Game on!

Both of these look awesome. Keep up the good work, Grandma and Tim.

It's too bad that college eats away my video-game time. I only get to play on breaks :(

hi grandma! long-time lurker here. just want you to know that you're my role-model every time someone asks me "you're almost 30 and a girl! why do you still play video games?"

now on to the topic at hand: i too have interrupted okami to start FFII. i was only able to get a couple of hours in last night, but so far you're right: FF is awesome again. and can i get a "hell yeah!" for the demise of random battles? that's the best part of the game for me so far. well, that and kicking the crap out of a giant tomato.

    game on!

Whoohoo! It's the return of OGHC videos! Let there be celebrations!

In any other website, that would sound so, very, wrong.

Good to know that Grandma is enjoying herself so much. Also good to know Final Fantasy is awesome again. We all know how much FFX rankled the chains of players everywhere.

But first you need to guaruntee one thing. As soon as it comes out, you MUST do a post on Zelda: Twillight Princess.

But it's simply too bad I won't be able to see your content over here across the border. MTV says that Copyright keeps them from showing the GHole outside of the US.

What's interesting is people on my side of the pond were not overly fond of FFXII. Not sure why because all of my American friends love the game. Odd.

Hi OGHC/Tim! Saw the video of you playing Okami. It's good to see I'm not the only gamer who yells profanities while playing ;)

I just got FF XII. I've got to say, its another classic from Square Enix! It's no FF 7, though.

Anyway, hope all is well. I'm doing a series of podcasts on the top reasons to/not to buy a Wii/PS3/360. Check out the first one on the Wii on our PodTech Weekly Newscast on Saturday!

    Game on!

How is grandma doing with those Stray Beads? Getting all of them is a real chore, especially the ones where you go through the gauntlet of enemies.

  • At 2:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Yes, I agree that you need to get all the stray beads. you'll unlock more extras the more you collect. But after you beat the game, you have the option of a New game+. Meaning you get to play the game with most of the abilities you had when you beat the game(you'll need to recollect all the brush tecs, all weapons except the final ones, you have no accessories... but you get to keep some of the abilities learned from the dojo Sensei. Man, that Sensei is very odd, I must say. Game on, Grandma!

Yay Grandma! That video just killed me! I bought Okami two weeks ago but didn't have a chance to open it between school and work, and then FFXII came out. I agree, it is absolutely fabulous! I'm only about 5 hours in or so (Vaan and Penelo are hunting for Jinn right now) but overall I am loving it so much. I was nervous about the battle system, but so far I'm finding it really easy to pick up -- though I guess I'll have to see how it goes once I have more people in my party.

    Hey OG
I just beat this game a couple of days ago and I LOVED it!

I got so into it that I got really crabby abbout it when I got stuck towards the end. I'm replaying it and enjoying the art a lot more now that I'm not cursing at the screen and stomping out of the room. :P

Ah, new OGHC video! Fills my heart with joy and glee. Joyous glee. MAD GLEE HERE, PEOPLES ::grin:: It's been a crazy week for me, and being reminded of the joy of gaming - especially Grandma gaming, and especially Okami - is a wonderful, calming thing. For reals.

Many hugs to you guys, all the best to you both, and eagerly awaiting updates of any and all kinds. Take care, be well, and GAME ON!

You are supposed to use the slow time brush technique so you can easily cross those spinning bridges!!!!

Ditto on the above comment: Mist was probably the one brush technique I used the most in the game.

Funny how different parts of a game hang different people up. I just cruised right through that part, but my boyfriend was just as frustrated as Grandma. Took him forever to make it across.

Okami is my game of the year. Just finished it and holding off on FF XII.

    Hi!

The song at the end of this one is "Aqueous Transmission" by Incubus, from their album Morning View.

    You can find it here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Morning-View-Incubus/dp/B00005QG9J/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-0262643-1385669?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1186776596&sr=8-1
(And it's a cheaper album now, too!)

I did speed it up quite a bit while preserving the pitch for the video, so when you hear it on the CD it will sound much more cool; very relaxing.

    Excellent song, excellent album.
