Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Monday Night Grandma Blogging: Ask Grandma Hardcore

Alright everybody! Let's talk about the FUTURE. The future of the industry to be exact, although feel free to make whatever other predictions you wish. Will the Nintendo Nex-Gen controller confound people? Will the Halo movie be any good? Open forum as usual, we're going well into the night, so West Coast and International readers get a chance to do some Mano y Grandma question asking.

Miss Cleo doesn't have shit on you folks.

I predict Grandma will be reported on by The Daily Show, and Rob Cordrey will make fun of Jack Thompson in some way.

Also, everyone will really be surprised by the Nintendo controller, and before you know it we'll have full out swords and light sabers for gaming.

Also, hamburgers will be a thing of the past.

The industry is doing very well, and it will only get better once the petty conservative publishing firms decide to introduce games to everyone, instead of just advertising on the young guy demographic.

But what the hell do I know?

    Sam-
Now you've done it; you've jinxed us :) Now she'll never be on The Daily Show. I think full out swords wouldn't be a safe bet for those who game in tight places, but a light saber would be undeniably cool. I like hamburgers. Don't you tell me that.

    anonymous-
I tend to agree. People are looking at Take-Two Entertainment right now with wary eyes, but the market is only getting better. The ironic part of it all is that Democrats are introducing bills against the industry and the politics within the video games themselves tend be on the liberal side of things. Weird. Grandma and I aren't taking sides as far as Right v. Left; this really isn't the place for that- we have lots of great fans on both sides of the fence. But the industry has a lot to which it can look forward.

    handoverfist-
I could see a Warcraft or StarCraft movie being excellent if done well, sure! Shit, Grandma would probably want to see it. Nintendo's crazy new shit looks better every day we think about it.

i also see, in the near future, Link looking as sexy as ever!

and finally, i can only hope everyone in the world will be blessed with the snazzy pants of grammy!

    aahhhh, the future is good

Those ARE your pants. Grandma took them. She has no regrets :) She's into Daisy duck, I guess. Also they were $10 dollars.

    m-
It isn't rape if it's consensual, you know. Link? Sexy? You'd have to ask Blue about that one. :) Oh she's got snazzy pants alright. Them pants is SNAZZY. (Grandma has told me to stop talking about her pants.)

Also, they were $10 dollars. :)

I see the industry doing well, but the types of games they make will probably go backwards into the syles of tetris and contra, just for the nostalgia of it all.

I can't take credit on that one, The Escapist told me it was so. But I think it will happen that way.

YES! That was a great article, and I think that it's very true. Folks will begin to want those classic 2D styles again after everything gets too realistic. Grandma is about to start up Final Fantasy VII again just for the hell of it. And THAT's considered ancient graphics to todays standards.

Here's one for you guys, I actually think Sony is going to come out on top of the next-gen race, and I'm not usually a huge Sony fan, I tend to play XBox games.

I think they're holding out on something, waiting to play their cards right.

Piss on Sony and Xbox if it wasn't for Nintendo, those two wouldn't be where they are. Nintendo changed games with every new console, and I am glade they are not going into this graphics and power competition with the other 2 jack off's. Nintendo will make you say awww in a good way next year that Sony and Xbox can't! P.S Grandma I just got done with a 6hr bout in Spiderman Ultimate, you should give it a look.

ha ha lol piss off sony & xbox..

    excuse me mr. nintendo gamer,

Nintendo however orginal you think they are have not changed the technology they use in 20 years. so your comment "Nintendo changed games with every new console, and I am glade they are not going into this graphics and power competition" is complete bullshit. This company still uses plastic cartridges for christsake.

Grandma likes Sony, but she's really not rooting for a "win" in the next-gen wars, she just hopes they can mantain the three bigs (and hey, if any independant companies put anything cool out, those too) because more consoles=more games=good.

    gamer phfreak-
Nintendo was made some great games; the NES and the original Zelda were Grandma's first real addiction. Before that it was fun to play Pac Man or Centipede, but it wasn't anything like that Gold colored cartridge. Grandma hates Peter Parker (long story, but will make for a great post one day) so it would never work.

    anon-
Don't get me wrong, we're both all about Sony and Microsoft; but there are times when the load times become awful and memory cards become expensive that we miss the cartridges a bit. Remember StarFox 64? Or Perfect Dark? Nintendo has a lot of good things going yet.

In order to change the state of games, you don't need revolutionary hardware, if that's what you're inferring. Mario Bros. was so different from anything at the time, that many people attribute it for reviving the home console market. Mario 64 revolutionised, or at least popularised, 3D platforming. Nintendo single handedly owned the North American handheld market for what, 15 years?

My personal thoughts on next gen is Sony and Ninendo are going to leave Microsoft a distant third over 2006.

    orderserenityeclipse-
That's true; many games in their own right have been set standards not limited by the traditionalist hardware- although the examples you give are fairly spot on. I do give Sony and Microsoft credit, though; for I remember a time deep within the bowels of the mid ninetees where "Nintendo" was synonymous with "video games," the same way "Kleenex" is to "tissues." Kids would have elementary school sleepovers and parents would say "Don't play Nintendo too late with your friends now.." followed by the obligatory "...Jeez, it's a Genesis, Mom. Gawd..." The Playstation overcame that hold on the market pretty well.

Grandma's hope, again, is that all three systems find their niche and become successful. She honestly doesn't have a preference between the three.

"There are some games I like on the XBox, same as the PS2 and the GameCube; I don't want to read a review and think 'Well, that's a Nintendo game, I'll wait till it's on PS2,' that takes the fun out of it. All three have their advantages and disadvantages."

Just wanted to say "HI!" from Japan! Crazy Michigander (that's MI speak for someone from Michigan) living in Tokyo here. I work on the fringe of the games industry (a small localization company), and I'm a lifelong gamer myself, so I always love to read what grandma has to say. ^_^
I guess I can join the ranks and say I wish I had a grandma like her! But then again, if I did, then mebbe I wouldnt get any playtime....hmm. Guess it all balances out.
Out of curiosity, was Grandma ever into Adventure games for the PC back in the mid 90's? I'm talking like Phantasmagoria, Shivers, Leisure Suit Larry, that kind of stuff. The stuff that made Sierra famous.
    Keep on Rockin, Grandma! ^_^

    remsaverem-
You know, I have my reservations about Grandma playing Leisure Suit Larry, I've thought about it. I don't know if she's played any version of it, and I don't know if she'd tell me if she did. Phantasmagoria, yes; Shivers, no- but she is familiar with Sierra enough where I think there is something she isn't telling me. Naughty Dog / Sierra put out some of the Crash Bandicoot franchise, and she owned pretty much every single one of those; ...but I keep coming back to Larry and she sits silently.

    I don't know!

Oh man, I've gone and done it. I'ma be known as the pervy elf-fancier comic now. D'oh! ::laugh::

Must just say, my main character is not me. NOT ME! But I must admit - as must all - Link is a handsome, handsome bit of elf in Twilight Princess. Seriously. They done made him that way.

Be good & game on! ::grin::

    -A!

The industry doesCheap Diablo 3 items adequately, and will also merely improve when the small old-fashioned publishing companies plan to expose game titles to every person, instead of just marketingkaufen wow gold around the small man demographic.
