Video #7: Fatal Frame II
Sorry it took so long with this one; this game has been particularly difficult. Despite our ominous message at the end, another video is already in the works!! Godspeed!

This one was shot with our new camera that isn't really new, but it sure beats the shit out of the little webcam. I am seriouly becoming worried that the game has some sort of evil manifesting itself in our equipment. And that's what makes this job fun!

--Update!! If you long time oghc readers look to the menu on the right, you will notice two little changes. The first, most important element is the videos are still there! I was piggy backing on my university's servers for a while and it was only a matter of time before they took them down (lots and lots of traffic and bandwidth, holy FUCK we used a lot of bandwidth.) The old directories should work for a little while, but the folks over at GamerGod.com did an incredibly generous thing- they put the videos on their servers. When you download the videos now, the only difference is the directory from which they come. Thanks to CmdrSlack; Grimwell; and Selby over at GamerGod, we can all watch Grandma swear at the tv. Make sure you go over there and tell them how much you appreciate it.
The second big difference makes me feel unclean. There is a paypal button underneath my e-mail address for all you crazies who keep saying "let us donate! You need a decent camera, asshole!" Well, you're right. The Optura 20 I was so excited to find is stuck at 1/60th Shutter Speed; with an ungodly small aperture that makes everything dark. I needs me a cheap MiniDV camera, probably a Wal-Mart Sony Handicam; just something to get the job done for everybody. Now begins The Great Grandma Camera Campaign; afterwords the donation button will hopefully be taken down so I can sleep at night.

Muuuuuuuch better video quality but it's still kinda hard to hear whats going on.
A vast improvement over the other video's though so keep up the good work and we look forward to more updates.

The new video quality rocks. I feel guilty that we couldn't contribute!
You can eliminate the really nasty room hum/fan noise (I thought Grandma ditched the wireless controller...or is it just too convenient...muhhahahahaha!) by running the audio through something like Sound Forge with the Sony Noise Cancelling plug-in. You highlight a snippet of the clip where nothing is being said/no music and it removes that "imprint" from the whole clip, which REALLY cleans up the audio. You'll be amazed, I promise. In fact, I might email you a sample because I've become obsessed with following the documentation of your grandma's mad skillz!

Christ, I don't think we're THAT popular :) Yeah, we just set up the account with Grandma's bank information; so it will be verified tomorrow (or at the very latest Thursday.) I let everyone know the progress of the drive via our daily posts; I'll look into coding up a simple counter for y'all as well.

I love the video quality on that. Granted, still gotta crank the volume to hear, but hearing those vulgar words stream from her mouth never felt so good while seeing every crease in her face. ROCK ON!

Not sure if you'll get Paypal or corporate donations to go high enough, but if you can scrape together about 3 grand and you want something that approaches broadcast-quality, here's what I recommend:
Canon GL2 camcorder, with XLR breakout box
Audio-Technica AT-835b mono shotgun microphone.
(For a few dollars more, consider getting a Rycote Softie for that microphone, so you can also shoot outdoors with it.)
Manfrotto / Bogen tripod with bubble level and fluid head.
And as money allows, at least one spare battery, cables as needed, lens cleaning supplies as needed, a rain cover for the camera, filters, etc.
If the room is dark, also consider getting one or two of those halogen work lights from Wal Mart or Sears. They're *very* cheap, but they're power-hungry and they get VERY hot. Consider getting some large sheets of "foam core" from a hobby supply store, and bounce the blindingly-strong halogen light off of that white board onto your subject. You probably already know this if you're into still photography, but don't use reflectors designed for flash photography with hot video lights, or they'll melt.
Of course you don't NEED all this to shoot video for such a small audience, but if the site gets popular enough, I think it'd make a worthwhile investment.

all of that equipment is a bit (i.e. a LOT) over the top for a simple living room video game setup. plus i don't fancy the lights surviving oghc's wrath.
good recommendations though, if there is ever a full-length oghc feature in the works.
i don't see that kind of money being used for a camera and a mic. maybe food or a plasma tv. :)

I have plenty of reflective white boards from still photography; but adding a halogen light over Grandma while she's playing video games might be a bit intimidating for her :)
If I keep the paypal button up for about 10 years; I might have enough for a GL2; let alone anything with XLR capabilities (ironically enough I have tons of XLR cable sitting around from my last job.) I'll be happy if I can get some cheap MiniDV camcorder with firewire, decent low light capabilities and the ability to plug in an external clip mic via a 1/8th plug, I have a couple of those lying around. Today I will try to push out the last footage the Optura 20 ever shot (left over from the tape from yesterday) so we have something for you guys until we can afford a new camcorder.
