She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Monday Night Grandma Blogging: Ask Grandma Hardcore #4: Fatal Frame


It's Monday night again, so it's time for an open forum. Tonight's topic is horror games. Grandma's playing Fatal Frame 2: The Crimson Butterfly for the PS2.

So tell us your stories! Ask us your questions! What was your favorite horror piece? Silent Hill? Resident Evil? Clocktower? WHAT??

    Heck, I need a new Gamecube game to play and I don't have any idea which to choose so.. Can Old Grandma Hardcore recommend a good game for me. I'm mainly into adventure and fighting titles?

    Did Grandma finish FF 1 ? I couldn't get through that part where you run around the sides of the pit running from the Monk and quit in frustration.

    UPRC- she really needs to know what Cube titles you've already played; I mean she said "Metroid Prime; and Resident Evil 4..." but chances are you've probably already played those. What games are you really fond of? Not the genre, but what Games?

    Zaius, here ya go: "A long time ago, Jesus. I finished it, though. I didn't start the FF series in order, I started with the third I think, then played the first two; ...I remember finishing though.

    you know, all the "survival horror" games I can play... DOOM 3 on the other hand I STILL haven't gotten through it. it spikes my pulse rate too much. of the survival type games though, Parasite Eve has a special place in my heart... the controls didn't suck

    Well, I've been thinking about picking up RE4, but Geist comes out next week and it looks pretty neat.. I guess I'm into pretty much all games. I haven't played many of the "huge" Gamecube games (Wind Waker, RE4, Metroid Prime, etc.), but I'm not interested in many of those. I usually find myself going for the lesser known titles.

    I liked all the original Doom "interpretations" in the third; but Grandma never really got into the original PC Doom game. She REALLY got into the XBox Doom 3 game however. ....she can kick my ass in multiplayer anyway. Now, she LOVED Parasite Eve; but I don't think that was nearly as scary as Silent Hill 2; or the ever terrifying Fatal Frame she's got going now.

    All right, here's a question- in any horror games have you ever been truly become frightened for a second or two in a game? Here's an example: see that wide shot of Grandma sitting in the chair on the main page? She jumped from the flash right after that was taken. Stuff like that...

    UPRC- Geist looks fantastic, but RE4 was long. Wait till the holidays when the price comes down and pick up RE4 and the original Metroid. They were definitely worth the hype.

    That being said, Geist is on our list, man.

    Psh, no problem, I thought I should share your glorious Grandma to a wider audience ;)

    Anyway, to answer your question: Hell yea!

    Fatal Frame to be exact. That game was so damn scary, and two was worse! Silent Hill 4 was pretty creepy too, but Fatal Frame is the top contender. Every little noise I would hear, I'd jump.

    Silent Hill 4 had great audio; and more than creepy graphics; but Grandma couldn't finish it.

    "You had to be in a fucking room the whole game!! I was getting sick of that stupid window..."

    I forget what came out at the same time, but she seemed to move on.

    Well, since tonight seems a little lax, I might as well ask a few questions!

    What do you think about the change between the old RE's and RE4? Did you think it changed for the better, or would you have liked to seem some improvements (i.e., that damn inventory system!)

    Also, have you played Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Gamecube? If so, what did you think of it and how it played out, if not, you should pick it up, it's wicked good.

    "I think it was better; you didn't have to worry about finding ribbons to save your game; your inventory was restricted, that's true- a single use rocket launcher took up half your damn case!" -G

    I do remember her complaining about the "participation required cutscenes," every time she had to face Krauser she would scream out "Cocksucker!!" mashing the shoulder buttons. Personally, I think RE4 was great; but you can't beat the anticipation of a giant Nemesis creature mumbling "STAARSSS..."

    It really proved of what the GameCube was capable.

    ED!! Fuck yeah! Silicon Knights, man! Grandma liked it, I remember that. Shit I remember being so scared they were going to fuck up Lovecraft's vision when Grandma called me to tell me about this game.

    Haha, they messed with your head so much in that game.

    I take what I said back earlier about FF.

    Scariest moment in gaming was in ED when the worst message possible shows up on the screen:

    "Your memory card file has been erased."

    Nooooooooooo!!

    What was Grandma's first game, what really got her into video games? And what's her favorite game?

    Oh, and has she ever played EarthBound? Both of you need it. If you guys haven't, you prbably remember the as. "This game stinks!"(it was referring to free scratch and sniff cards that came wit the game)

    "I played Centipede at the bowling ally! Um.... That gold copy of Zelda for the NES, that's better than any of the Atari games, I guess that's what got me into it.

    I don't remember the scratch and sniff thing, but I probably rented it... Gen- no: Super Nintendo! ...I think. Tim?"

    I didn't play it. I vaguely remember Grandma playing it awhile back and I think it was the SNES. I didn't know they had scratch and sniff marketing though... what the hell did it smell like?

    The scariest game I've ever had to play was the first Silent Hill for the PS2. Being the first real "non-zombie horror" game of it's time, it was pretty freaking scary. Has Grandma or Tim ever played Silent Hill 1 or Silent Hill 3? (Particularly the elevator scene)...
    I was also terrified the very first time I played Resident Evil on the PS1. It came from the fact that I just got the system and didn't have a memory card with which to save my game. I got to the last boss, got killed, and had to do the entire game over again in one sitting. That being said, RE4 rocked hard. I love capping fools in the knees.

    "Oh Jesus, my childhood? Shit. I grew up in South Cleveland. (South Cleveland used to stink like fish back then) My dad was cruel, that's what I remember. I got into trouble with my siblings a lot, we had fun. I remember my brother sneaking me into a funeral home, and they were cremating I think, and the corpse sat up from gas or something. I screamed so loud! We got in a lot of trouble for that. Christ that was a while ago...."

    "Oh, I played the first 3 Silent Hill Games, the second one was for PS2, it was probably the best- you're right. The first Resident Evil game!! I jumped so god damn high when the dog came through the window when you first start playing in the mansion. Now, the game looks terrible, but it was great in its day."

    "I've made quite a few purchases I've come to regret. I remember getting Star Fox Adventures for the Cube, thinking I would get to fly around, you know like in the SNES game or the N64 game; but it was pretty stupid. I've learned to rent before I buy. Now I just read the comments section of the site and kind of, like- read EGM and Game Informer and Playstation Magazine and Xbox Magazine and GamePro's site and look at the reviews. That's how I ended up getting Conker."

    Bejesus, I require cheap D3 Gold a fresh Gamecube game to experiment with i have zero idea which to choose thus.. Could Older Mom Great advocate a great video game in my opinion. I am just primarily intoBuy Guild Wars 2 Gold adventure and also combating brands?
