Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

What was Grandma's favorite part of Resident Evil 4 and did she enjoy the movie or it's sequel?

    Hey Grandma Hardcore!

It's great to see you enjoying yourself. Video games seem like a perfect activity for older people that can't do much. Do you think it would be a good idea for retirement homes and retirement communities to provide their residents with game consoles? Or do you think it would be a waste of time for them to try?

What is Grandma's favorite weapon in any game ever? Chaingun? Chicken gun? Missle command line? (P.S. Let her know that this is the single most fascinating blog that I have read in a long time.)

    Hello Grandma!

I've never really played video games much growing up because I sucked sooo bad that all my friends made fun of me...REALLY made fun of me. But, you have inspired me. I think you are so hilarious and awesome that I felt left out. So, I went to my brother's place and played Lego Star Wars last weekend.

My question for you is...what would you say to me if I told you it took me TWO HOURS to pass the pod race? *wince*

(And I'm serious. It really took me that long.)

Grandma, tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up? How did you get into gaming? Was your husband into games?

Hey there gamer grandma, was in the neighborhood and just thought i would field ya a question. I was watching the forth video...the one where you were playing conker...I couldnt help but notice how you were enjoying the joint gag....made me think..... grandma sounds like a friend of the kind. I was wondering grandma.....do you or have you ever smoked the mary-jane (your grandson is most likely trying to shield your eyes right now from reading this.) And if you don't or never have...its most likely time your grandson scored you something....it would be the cool thing to do. It is by far the only way to play video games. Weeeeeelllll.....bought time to hit the ole dusty trail.

If grandma could change one thing about gaming what would it be?

alright here's our first batch- let's ask her:

#1: "Christ, let me think... I like when all the villagers came out you at once, that was a challenge... I'd have to put the game back in to really pick out my favorite part. I don't really like most movies based on games; games are better. With movies, it feels like you should be sitting there doing something."

#2: "It might work, but most people I talk to at those places aren't really exposed to it; so they have no idea where gaming comes from."

#3: "The BFG. (I think you know what that stands for) The gun that turns shit into sheep was good; the Chicago Typewriter... it's hard to choose, really."

#4: "Keep on trucking, man. I suck to sometimes. The more you play the better you learn it"

#5: "Oh yes; I've played all those; all the ratchet and clank series and I can't wait for the next one."

#6: "I haven't played it yet, it looks interesting- it's definitely on the list of games to play"

#7: "I get used games, but don't really have a loyalty to one store or another."

#8: Dude. You mentioned her ex. They got divorced, and she never really looked back. Here's her answer: "He thought games were stupid. I'll just leave it at that."

    #9: I can't even touch that one, man. :)

#10: "Damn, that's hard.... [five minutes later] ...stop making shitty movies about video games."

All right East Coast, we're saying goodnight; West Coast and international readers, keep posting questions and they'll be answered tomorrow. Thanks for the questions everybody!

Hey Gran Gran... you rock the casbah! Just a quick question... do you ever try to turn your friends on to gaming when they come over or when you go out? It's obviously worked well to keep you energetic; who's to say it won't work for others of your age?

Oh, and off topic; does Granny like musicals like Phantom of the Opera? My creative mind has faint stirrings of a parody of the title song dedicated to the Hardcore Grandma... maybe I'll type it and post it up.

    Take care, Tim and Grandma!

I'm a local boy, and I was wondering if you and Grandma ever went out to Space Invaders on Pearl Road in Parma...and if she got pissed when they closed it.

    Have you ever played Myst?

Is there any genre of game you wouldn't touch?

    Will you marry me? ;)

    Grandma rocks my socks.

I've been kinda bugging you about this (does leaving a few random comments count?): Have you ever played any of the Bard's Tale games? They go way back, but I don't recall any good console adaptations... until recently. I highly recommend the new one with the voices. There were several scenes that I had to stop as I was laughing so hard I couldn't see the screen.

When you hear "you got SERVED", you'll understand.

    Alrighty, let's ask her:

#1: "No they think it's stupid. They don't understand why I play." Wade, Andrew Lloyd Weber would be proud... ...just before he sues you. :)

#2: "Unreal Tournament, mostly; The Doom series of course, half-life... no favorite..."

    #3: "Civilization!!"

#4: "...Hunting down the rarest parts of the game; the parts most people give up trying to pursue. That satisfies me the most, I guess."

#5: "I've been an East Sider for a while in Cleveland, so I never been; I haven't really frequented the arcades, because until recently- I was sort of chastised when I would go by the other people there."

#6: Hauk- she can't make me do anything!! Including spell check! I am my own man.

#7: The GTA problem has pissed grandma off; but I think we addressed it in another thread. Check "Grandma's Secret Stash II" comments section for a good conversation on Hot Coffee. Bottom line- it's the parent's responibility not the politicians.

#8: "Myst? I fucking hated Myst only because our computer at the time ran it so slow. Riven also. Whenever I play Madden or NCAA type games with the family they get 'overly excited' when they win, so I tend not to play those. Marry you? I don't think you could put up with me."

#9: "Not yet; but I will definitely check it out."

--Alright! That's all for this edition; more updates on the way; Video #5; etc.,. Thanks for the questions everybody!--
