Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Grandma! Glad to hear you're feeling better!

I've been playing games since the Atari when I was very wee, but my favorite era of gamestuff is the SNES. What are some of your favorite SNES games? If you love Chrono Trigger I'm going to send you a big wet kiss.

What is the answer to life?

    Mark-
"ChronoTrigger was a great game, in fact I'd have to say most of the stuff put out by Square on the SNES would make up my 'favorites,' although I really got into StarFox...Aero the Acrobat... I think there was a Contra on the SNES I really liked, but that could have been Genesis- Look, I've played A LOT of SNES games, it's hard now to look back and decide which ones were the BEST."

    Kerry-
"The fuck should I know? [laughs]"

Kerry, I'd like to present you with- the answer: "Matter is energy; in the Universe there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However, this soul does not exist *ab inito*, as orthodox Christianity teaches; it has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation. However, this is rarely achieved owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia."

10 Points to whoever gets the reference.

hey grammy, what is it like knowing you have a cult following on the net; a majority of which are about your grandkids age? has your life changed majorly from OGHC's existence or are you pretty much the same as it was *before* the insanity?

oh, and this is an odd request but...in some of your videos a certain sombrero makes an appearance--where'd you get it?--could you please wear it once in a video? For that is one hell of a sombrero.

    Hey Grandma!

Are you going to buy a Nintendo Revolution? What do you think of the new controllers?

    PEACE!

  • At 9:45 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I thought the answer to life was 42? ;)

Grandma and CtrlAltDelete, what kind of music do you listen to regularly? Non-game music that is?

  • At 9:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

No, that's the answer to life, the universe, AND everything. ;)

  • At 9:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    I stand corrected. :)

    Then maybe it's just 39?

    M-
"I don't really think it IS a CULT following. It hasn't really changed me, I'm still who I always have been. ...I think it's funny to tell the truth. I think you'd be disappointed if you met me in real life. [laughs] I got the sombraro from Chi Chi's at my birthday party years ago. They wanted to give me that cheap straw one they usually get, but that one was hanging on the wall, and my son Mark bought it from the restaurant! Sure I'll wear the damn sombraro, I don't care!"

Kerry- People aren't wearing enough of them :)

    Anon-
"Definitely I'm going to buy a Revolution, but I won't know about the controller until I actually try it. You never know until you try."

    Anon
"Tim says I listen to weird music. [laughs] All I can say is my thunderstorm cd doesn't sound like a storm on Tim's surround sound he has me playing it on- it sounds like someone playing the drums!"

I listen to pretty much EVERYTHING, as you can tell from the music in the videos. Punk, Rock, Classic Rock, Ska, Rap, R&B, Alternative, College, Big Band, Soft, Cultural, classical, JAZZ, EVERYTHING!"

42 is not the answer you were looking for? :)

    Hey Grandma & Time,

My question for grandma, Did you ever own a Master System? I don't recall anyone ever asking this and I was curious as I never had a Nintendo as a kid I was always Sega.

ok grandma, I would love to hear your take, katamari damacy, good? or bad? or in the middle? I freakin' love it, if you've never played it believe me it's fun, and it's short as hell so it won't get in the way of your other projects, but, unlocking everything does take a hell of alot of work...oh well, fun game, and for $20!?! Yeah, get it.

"YES. I played both Xenosagas for the PS2. After I was done with the first, I put the memory card away with the game on the rumor that one coul dkeep some of their abilities built up in the first at the beginning of the second. I waited TOO LONG for the second to finally come out. I loved both games, but there were way too many cutscenes, and they were too long. Story is very important for a game, but when it is completely linear in Xenosaga, how no matter what you do, the outcome is usually the same, in the same order- it can take away from the gameplay. Really Xenosaga was like playing an anime movie. It was still great though. In Final Fantasy VII, my favorite, the outcome was linear, but you could ...deviate from the order somewhat, so you could defeat Ruby Weapon if you wanted, but you didn't need to. You could breed Chocobos, but you didn't need to, you know?"

    J-
"Yes! I remember the light gun on the damn thing never worked! I started on Arcade games, then an Atari- then after Tim was born I had a Socrates for Tim that we played on, a Sega Master System, an NES, an SNES, a Genesis, a 32x to go with it, then we built up to the newer systems like the Saturn, and later all the good ones we have now."

    kurtis-
"Katamari Damacy is a great game! Tim introduced me to it, and we finally went out an bought it this year. After you get the all the presents and the Moon to Eternal Mode, it still makes a good multiplayer! I hated some of the constellation challenges, though- the fucking COW VENDING MACHINE, etc.,... I still love the game."

Okay everybody! I'm going to sleep. West Coast and International readers, go ahead and post your questions and I'll ask Grandma tomorrow. Good night!

What? You mean this isn't a cult?! *eyes sacrificial lamb behind him, OGHC painted over it in blood* ...Well, shit.

Anyway, what does Grandma think about Alternate Reality Games (I Love Bees, for example)? Has she played any before?

  • At 4:21 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

How would you feel about The Indigo Prophecy? I've just started it and I'm loving it. But the whole "track and field" thing might not be too good for the old RSI.

There is a sequel to RAD in Japan that's based on an anime series Tetsujin (Iron Man) 28. It's a newer engine, and it's overall better. I doubt it will come here so you'll have to import it.

    ross-
Needless to say, she's intrigued. I'm devoting a post to her reaction later today for you as a fuller answer. :)

    master yoshi (and anonymous)
-"Not yet! Is it more like a MechAssault game or a XenoGears game? Or neither.... Tell me more, I might pick it up!"

    master yoshi-
"YES! I have heard of that! That description was exactly what I needed- no, I haven't played it yet; but I like the concept a lot."

Thanks Master! I hope we can pick this one up soon, it DOES sound interesting. Shit, if Grandma doesn't, I certainly will.
