Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Grandma Buys Something Stupid

While the search is on for a firewire cable and a charger cord for the Canon; I'd like to show you one of the worst purchases Grandma has made since Virtual Boy. Many readers have addressed that Grandma has a bit of problems with the cord getting tangled and suggested a wireless controller to ease her troubles. Both Grandma and I hesitated, knowing that she plays so god damn much each day that she'd have to buy batteries every time she filled up the car; or have a set of rechargeables on every outlet in the house, you know: just in case.

Saturday she went out to find a strategy guide for Fatal Frame 2. She was stuck in an area a GameFAQs fan written guide said was a cinch to get through. She also wanted another headset adapter piece for another XBox controller for playing Live. GameStop apparently didn't have either.

So instead, she came home with this:

It's not exactly the Logitec wireless I thought she would buy, but it sure looked cool. It's a Nyko "Air Flo" Wireless PS2 controller. It came with 4 "AA" batteries and a little old-school arcade stick you could poke into the center of the directional buttons.

"The guy at the store said it was better than the Logitec one I wanted, and he says it keeps your hands cool or something."

Yes. There is a big honkin' FAN on the front of this controller that looks like it was just taken out the back of an old 486 Presario. The controller has a fan. It's wireless. It runs on batteries. Guess what happened.

It was around 2:00am Monday morning I heard her digging around for her trusty Dual Shock she stuffed away in a cabinet.

Around different electronics sites, this controller has received decent reviews. But if any of you play like Grandma, expect a different standard. Now we have a cool looking battery eater sitting on top the PS2.

Sometimes it's worth the hassle we go through for the good quality controllers. Those wireless piece of crap ones always die.

Return said POS? No reason to keep something like that around if you aren't going to use it...

There are wireless set ups where you plug the actual dualshock cord into a box which then transmits to another box which is plugged into the playstation. You might want to consider that.

    Return it!

And get the Logitec one. I picked one of those up a couple weeks ago and love it. It's very comfortable and doesn't devour batteries. (I'm still on its first set.)

I gotta agree, I have a Logitech one and it works great, and have been barreling through God of War with it. Slight differences between it and the Dual Shock (sticks are looser, the shape buttons are a little raised), but it's easy to get used to. Just be sure you get the model that uses 2 AA batteries instead of 4 (should be the common brand available).

We have the "Air Flow" controller. The best thing about is that it does keep your hands cool. It doesn't eat batteries too badly considering play-time. However, it's just too darn big. Yes, my hands stay cool, but trying to work the controls was very annoying.

Er, the fan is pointing away from your/her hands so how can it "keep you cool" ?

    Odd.

The only wireless pad i've ever used was a WaveBird for the GameCube and it was awesome. Shame they're not all like that.

dy357lx.........just so u know the air flow controller has a main fan in the back that circulates cool air through the front hand grips. Obviously, u have never used one. i have a nonwireless gamecube air flow, and on the high setting it's like having ur hands by the air conditioning vent.

There are wifiBuy Diablo 3 gold fixed united parcel service the place you plug the exact dualshock power cord in to a box which in turn directs to an alternative package that is connected to the actual
Billig Gw2 Gold nintendo wii. You might want to take into account that.
