Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

One time I went to the hospital, to get my tonsils removed or something, when I was like eight, and they gave me this gas, that put me to sleep, but I distinctly remember everything turning into multicolored tetris blocks in my last moments of conciusness. The doctors, the light, everyhing, turned into tetris blocks. Then one of them said "DO A BARREL ROLL1". Did Grandma experience anything like that?

    Here's the first batch-

1- "No. [laughs long and hard] NO!! nothing like that happened this time, although the catheter was sort of like watching someone play StarFox. Inside me."

2- "What I always do!! What do you think? [smiles] God Mode is almost done..."

3- "Thanks Max! Now I can concentrate on my games! Hell yeah!"

4- "I learned that for an old lady my heart is very good! Or so they tell me."

5- "I've only played a console version; sorry. I did find that if you take big risks and go for the long ball at first rather than, ...you know; like- laying it up and going for par- and par threes! Par threes are a bitch; par fives are your best friend. I'm not really sure what else to say on that one. If it was Hot Shots or Outlaw Golf it'd be different..."

you snuck that one in there colleen :)

"They said it might be a combination of minor blockage in the heart (nothing that needs surgery, just some medication) and this one medication I was taking. At least they're pretty sure. I don't know. Thanks for the get well messages, by the way everybody- they meant a lot in there, and they cracked up the nurses!"

No problem about the updates; it sort of helped me a bit too, like I was just relaying the message and detatched from the emergency just a bit. It's all good!

Grandma! So happy you're back! I found out you'd gone on Friday when I was at work, and then next thing I know I'm at home and our internet goes out for the ENTIRE WEEKEND! I'm so glad you're OK ::smile::

I also wanted you and Tim to know that I would be happy to let you guys stay with us so you can go on "Attack of the Show" - we live about an hour-and-a-half from LA (in traffic, that is, without it's maybe 45 minutes) so if you can brave the drive, we'd love to have you stay. Once they've got a budget to bring you to LA, we've got a place for you (provided you aren't allergic to cats, that is: I can promise you they're not the usual fiendish "pet me or I'll hate you forever" type of cats, but more akin to dogs that love you, but don't slobber all over you and bark all the time, and still manage to shit in a box) (if that makes any sense)

Be well, rest easy, and after Psychonauts, I hear nothing but good things about Radiata Stories. ::smile:: All my best to you both!

    -A!

glad you're back! we can all sleep again knowing you're back and far away from the hospital food (you didn't touch the green jello, did you? that stuff will put you right *back* into the hospital).
how much does it take to transport two people from ohio to la? i think a lot of us would happily contribute to a fund to see grammy on AotS...?

    Next batch.....

1- "Tim exaggerates when he talks about Robinson, he hates it there. It does have a reputation, I guess- but they were really nice to me this time. The nurses and the doctors were really great. It was another doctor I go see that prescribes the medication, but I don't think they anticipated any of this."

2- "Blue, that's sweet of you, but we couldn't ask you to do that. You don't know us from adam! Besides, G4 said in their invitation they'd provide lodging, it's just I won't go without Tim. I couldn't do it. They said when they had another travel budget they'd call write us back. It's not the cats! I just can't ask that kind of hospitality from anybody. They give us a hotel room anyway, Blue- it's okay!"

3- "Thanks m! I didn't like the food because they had me on a cardiac diet, which means no salt and no caffeine! How much would it cost? Too much!! I can't ask you guys for that, I'd feel selfish! And I don't think Tim could either. Thanks for the thought!!"

Aw, I understand entirely: I just wanted to put the offer out there in case those G4 cheapskates weren't offering lodging ::wink:: I do hope that you have some sort of, I don't know, "fan event" or whatever when you do come down - a big "Friends of OGHC" meetup, invading some unsuspecting restaurant, then throwing down on some gaming of various delightful kinds. ::grin:: I'm always big fan of some good group gaming!

Honestly speaking, and I know this sounds lame: I'm really happy for what both you guys are doing for the gaming industry. I know you're just doin' what you do (i.e. kick ass at games, and being awesome), but it's doing a part to help dispel the twin delusions that 1) women don't play games (which I have to fight against all the time, as a woman in the gaming industry), and 2) that only kids play games (which we all know is crap!). The more people know about how awesome you guys are the better - plus the videos just RULE. ::grin:: I hope when I'm an elder stateswoman of gaming that my kids/grandkids look up to me as much - and that I don't stop gaming, EVER!

Anyhow. Take care, you guys, and a quick random question, because I feel like asking quick random questions: what's your favorite type of food? Chinese? Mexican? Greek? (myself, I pretty much dig any style of Asian cuisine - ESPECIALLY if curry is involved) All the best!

    -A!

Hi grandma, you already got many fans in Mexico, some of us have their blogs, like myself. Im very glad you are fine, hope you dont get any problems in the future, i wanna ask something, where do you get the money to buy all the games? what type of music do you like to hear when you are in an action game, or you just enjoy the game music? and, do any of you grandma or tim, have pets?

    thanks and take care =)

Blue- We'd like to set up a sort of tour when we travel! It be a nice way of meeting Grandma's fans and jsut enjoying the gaming culture. We have a lot more lined up dispelling those very stereotypes you mention. We do what we can :) Grandma loves Asian dishes, I dig Mexican.

pepeslife- "I get a little spending money at the end of the month from a pension and from social security. Most of the time they're gifts from family or friends who know what I'm into, but recently some gaming companies have sent me some games they thought I'd like (sometimes they're great, othertimes no so much!). It's really fun to get a package from one of the companies with a letter inside saying 'Hey Grandma! Love what you do, thought you'd like a game!' Most of the time I just like the game music- it's gotten a lot better as the systems get better. We have two dogs and two birds, all of which are annoying!"

Okay! Grandma's logged on to XBox Live catching up with people since she was in the hospital, but I need rest. (2:00am on the East Coast). West Coast and International readers, go ahead and post your questions and I'll post Grandma's responses tomorrow for you. Good night!!

    Okay!

1- "Jon, seriously? Of course! GTA is a great series."

    2- Oh she's back with a vengence :)

3- "The new Rainbow Six is supposed to be fantastic. I'm looking forward to it! Although, my strategy isn't always the best with squad based shooters, I tend to just plow in and get killed too quick. (like Brothers In Arms)"

4- "Nah, I'm going to have to buy it! If it's anything like Spirits Within I think it will be pretty cool."

Alright everybody! Thanks for welcoming Grandma back with a great Ask Grandma Hardcore. We'll see you next week for another if you missed this one. Thanks folks!
