Old Grandma Hardcore

This blog is the chronicle of my experiences with Grandma, the video-game playing queen of her age-bracket and weight class. She will beat any PS2, XBox, GameCube, etc., console game put in front of her, just like she always has. These are her stories. She is absolutely real. She lives in Cleveland.

Grandma has been asking those who went to E3 exactly what they thought about it, and we think this video pretty much shows the worst of the worst.

Insincere, fake press conferences to tired journalists trying to catch meetings scheduled in a way such that it's impossible to keep, all packaged in a way that just rather pisses them off.

She's almost GLAD she didn't go this year, but I think she was pretty disappointed the whole show went up in smoke.

BLUE DRAGON. What's she think? Interested?

  • At 10:27 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

rss ftw. I got first question: when are you making another goddamn video?

    Slacker ;)

  • At 10:33 PM, Blogger CtrlAltDelete said…

sam: FUCK YES. With as many magazine articles that came out about the thing it's been teasing her for months. It's not Square-Enix but it definitely looks square-ish... if that makes any sense. It comes out next month so I'm hoping to get a copy for her.

anon: I'm working on it! Right now she's pretty lax with Odin Sphere so I was about an EDF: 2017 video, but that's up to her. You can't force it.

Okay, I have two questions; one for Grandma, and one for Tim.

For Tim: Do your friends, and other people you hang around with(not including people who read every update on here) know how awesome Grandma is? I'm just curious.
For Grandma: Does Grandma play any Pokémon games?

    Game on, indeed!

  • At 10:40 PM, Blogger CtrlAltDelete said…

anon: The friends I grew up with and the people that I know have always thought she was cool as hell. Shit, back in High School it was almost a litmus test.
"Hey, did you know Tim's grandma is a gamer?"
    -"Nuh-uh. You're a fucking liar."
"Why, are you saying older folks can't game?!"
And it would go on from there :) Now, when I work and have a photo assignment, sometimes people recognize the last name and tell me "Your grandma RULES!" And these are adults speaking. It's been overwhelmingly positive.

I never really got in to pokemon that much. My one grandson tried getting me into the Gameboy pokemon games but it just wasn't for me I think.

  • At 10:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Good, Grandma deserved to be KNOWN! :D lol

I was just thinking about how cool it would be if I could ever have a Pokemon battle through Wi-Fi with you, Grandma. oh well..:)

  • At 10:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

jesus that video is painful. whoever decided to do that should be forced to watch it again and again for the rest of their lives.

  • At 10:53 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

honestly I wouldn't know what to do. It's been so long since I even tried playing it!

  • At 11:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Bah, you'd figure it out. Pokémon's not really complicated until you get into compeitive battling.

    I've thought of another question:
Do you play Starfox games, grandma?

  • At 11:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What is your favorite type of game?

  • At 11:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

It depends on the Starfox game. I like them but I'm not very good at flying games. Then again the Starfox Adventures game for the GameCube was shit. They tried to make it a platform and it just didn't work I think.

I guess RPGs would be my favorite, but platform, horror, puzzle, strategy, pretty much anything can be really great!

What do you think about Sony's decision to make the 80gb Playstation 3 the same price the 60gb was before?

  • At 11:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I don't know. When I bought the 60g b in March it was still what, $599? That's a lot of money. Tim says you can swap out the drives for any old drive anyway, so 20gb isn't enough of an increase for a new system. They should have made it at least 100gb if they would keep the price where it is. But I don't know. It's complicated.

  • At 11:24 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What game are you currently trying to beat?

  • At 11:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Odin Sphere is a bitch. I don't know if I'll ever finish this one.

Tim and I are trying to get through the harder levels of earth defence force.

And I put CoD2 and some older games in when I get bored. Not a lot of new games yet!

  • At 11:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    I don't know! Maybe.

The kids really loved the last one and I'm curious how the new characters hold up. I need some new Wii games. My poor Wii isn't getting enough play.

  • At 11:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Well, super mario strikers charged is coming out this week.

  • At 11:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I saw that. I wonder if I'd be any good at a soccer game.

  • At 11:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Are you going to get Banjo Kazooie 3 when it comes out for the xbox 360?

  • At 11:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

The last one I got was for the N64 I think. So I might be a bit rusty. Still, I'm curious to see how Rare did this time around.

  • At 12:09 AM, Blogger Tommie said…

    I got two questions.

What's your opinion on the upcoming FPS, Bioshock? From the screens, videos, and previews I have read, this will be something different. Would you play it?

Sony had a very good conference this year at E3, showing off some impressive games. Which PS3 games are you looking forward to playing? Personally, I'm excited about Warhawk, Folklore, and Haze.

  • At 12:20 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Hey grandma! Just wondered if you would download Paper Mario from Virtual Console, a terrific RPG that is now quite rare and expensive to buy, but onyl 10 bucks on the Wii. ActRaiser is great, too, as are the two Donkey Kong Countries. I am playing these for the time being while I wait for August.

Are you gonna give Persona 3 a shot? Ever played any Shin Megami Tensei games? Challenging and weird, but certainly unique. I am waiting on Two Worlds, Blue Dragon, BioShock, Halo 3, Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect, GTA IV, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Phantom Hourglass. Lost Odyssey and Assassin's Creed, cannot wait for those, either. I think I will have a good fall.

  • At 12:36 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I'm definitely looking forward to Bioshock, but I'm afraid people are going to treat it the same way they treated Gears. Either they really love it, or they unfairly hate it.

I really want to get my hands on Little Big Planet, the new Ratchet & Clank and Haze. The new Metal Gear Solid looks fantastic.

I've already got Paper Mario! All of them in fact. Donkey Kong Country is news to me, I do think I'll get that. I remember when it first came out, there was this video that explained how great and new the graphics would be for the SNES game. And it was!

I'd try it! I've played Digital Devil Saga but other than that, not really. I'm looking forward to everything you mentioned, but I wish they had better screens for Metroid Prime 3. I played a demo level at E3 2006 and it didn't look as choppy as the EGM article made it look.

  • At 12:48 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Glad to hear it. I think BioShock will be awesome, but there is always somebody to hate what everyone else loves.

I am an MGS nut, played every one of the games, love Snake Eater the best, but MGS4 will blow it out of the water, I am sure. Yeah, Paper Mario rocks, I never played it before, best VC investment yet. I think Donkey Kong Country still looks really good, and I love the music, and it is a great platformer.

Try Nocturne, I think it is better than both Digital Devil Saga games. I also want Chains of Olympus on PSP, but I think it comes out on December 31.

Now, just some games I hope to see on the Virtual Console. Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Majora's Mask, and Earthworm Jim.

Keep on gaming, grandma, and here's to a magnificent and exciting fall.

Hi Grandma! I just stumbled onto this blog about two weeks ago (yes. I'm slow.) and I've been wanting to say hi.

Not a gaming question, but when you do read, what genre of books do you most enjoy?

  • At 1:23 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I can afford one system this year (excluding PS3), I can't decide, if you had to choose which would you recommend?

  • At 1:59 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Yo...

Grandma is really damn good. I salute her. Does she play cooking mama:cook off or trauma center:second opinion on wii???

    Cheers and keep on gaming...

  • At 2:08 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I read pretty much whatever new fiction shows up in the library. Sometimes I read a few books and a few months later I start reading a book I didn't realize I had already read. I really like mystery and horror.

If you can really only afford one system, the PS2 is the best value at the moment. It's $99 bucks now and has TONS of games. After that, the Wii along with a copy of RE4 or an XBox 360 with a copy of Dead Rising. The 360 has a LOT more games and it works great for online matches, but once you buy one you're probably going to have to replace it in a year or so. The Wii doesn't have many games yet but its a hell of a lot of fun for group games. It all depends on what your tastes are.

I beat Trauma Center and I rented Cooking Mama once! I didn't have enough time with it to really play, though.

  • At 2:13 AM, Blogger Richard MacDonald said…

What's your take on Wii Fit? And have you ever played Elebits? It's a lot of fun, and I saw a used copy at GameStop for $35.

  • At 2:31 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Wii Fit looks like a continuation of what they've been doing with the Wii remote, but I don't think I'll ever be able to play it. It's hard with my knees the way they are to keep balance. They have to be careful, though. The more they complicate games as far as dragging a bunch of equipment out, the less fun its going to be unless the games are really incredible. I don't know.

I did play Elebits! We rented it once, it was fun. Again, I was playing other stuff so I didn't spend enough time on it to really get the whole thing.

Hi Tim, hi grandma! I actually have 2 questions (for now). I'm not sure if those have been answered already, but here we go:

1: When is the next video coming up?

2: What does grandma think about The Darkness? Will she be playing it?

That's it for now. GAME ON!

Hey Grandma! I have a few questions for you:

[1] What are your top five picks for the Xbox Live Arcade.

[2] What are your top five Xbox 360 games.

[3] Which company do you think had a better press conference back at E3?

    I wish I could meet Grandma in person, as I have so many questions! I eventually decided on these two though;

    1. Who are your top 3 favourite Final Fantasy characters (from any FF), and why?

    2. After seeing the ending to God of War 2, are you pulling your hair out waiting for God of War 3?

    :) Thanks Grandma!

  • At 9:23 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    I have a few-

What is your favorite Final Fantasy game?

    Have you ever played Earthbound?

And... who is your favorite video game character?

Thanks for being an awesome role model for girl gamers everywhere.:)

What game are you most excited about for this fall? One game I'm really excited about is Naughty Dog's new game Uncharted.

  • At 11:03 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Hmmmm...what to ask now? Oh, I know:

Hey Grandma, what does it feel like to be the coolest grandma EVER?

And...what is the worst game you have ever played, and what made it bad?

  • At 12:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Yo grandma, have u ever played World of Warcraft, the MMORPG?

By the way, i am a HUGE Clevland Cavaliers fan like you, wondering if u play any NBA games to play as them?

    Sup Old,

Just wondering if you are looking forward to Metroid Prime 3 comming out this Augest.

  • At 2:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Hey oghc! I'm just wondering, do you have a favorite game?

  • At 5:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Braujo, I'm not sure when Tim's making the next video. He mentioned he wanted to do one soon but he's working also. Maybe this weekend. I'm curious about the Darkness, so I might rent it first, just to see what it's like.

Tim, my top five picks for XBLA? Jesus. My favorites don't necessarily mean I think they're the best, they're just the ones I play the most. I'd say Catan, Luxor 2, Texas Hold'em, Pool, and then Lumines.
Top five XBox 360 games? See, it's questions like that that are hard. It's hard to pick an order. I guess... Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Gears of War, and then Oblivion.
Who had the best press conference? That's easy. None of them. They were all kinda embarassing this year. They learned the hard way that when you get rid of the fanboys, the cheering they usually have at these things at everything they say goes away. The games looked great, but I saw most of them last year.

Lindsay, my favorite Final Fantasy characters are Sephiroth, because he's just awesome, Tifa, because she's not as whiny as Cloud, and then maybe Balthier, because he's a fucking pirate and he's cool as hell.
I can wait for God of War 3. If they released it too soon you lose the anticipation of the thing. I want them to take a good long time to make it so it isn't rushed.

anonymous, my favorite final fantasy game is VII, I haven't played Earthbound yet, and there are WAY too many characters to choose to pick an absolute favorite!

kyle, I've always been a fan of the Naughty Dog guys. Blue Dragon is coming out next month, I think Guitar Hero 3 is a December release, and Ratchet & Clank isn't coming out until next year, and then of course is GTA VI, and I don't know if the Wii Manhunt 2 game is ever going to happen now. There's a lot more, but I can't think of them at the top of my head at the moment.

I'm not the coolest Grandma ever! The coolest Grandma ever is probably rich! I've played a LOT of bad games. I try to forget them. The most recent one was Driver 2 or Drive3r 2 or however the fuck they spell it. It was just horribly bad.

I've never played World of Warcraft, mattn. I know so many people who are into it and try to get me to play but the PC and I don't get along much. I don't know if it would even run on my computer it's so damn shitty. And I ALWAYS play as the Cavs, Indians, and Browns when I play sports games, which isn't that often to tell you the truth. Tim hasn't been a Browns fan since they left Cleveland in the 90's and then came back, so I like to tease him.

anonymous, I remember playing a demo level at E3 2006 and it looked great! The way it locked on to targets made controls and aiming much easier. But then when I saw the screenshots in EGM recently, it looks kinda jagged. They can do better than that I think.

anonymous, my favorite game is still Final Fantasy VII. It's going to be awhile before I find one good enough to finally say it's something else!

    Hey, OGHC. Longtime fan, here.

I was wondering what your opinion on Mass Effect is?

Personally it looks like it might be the game that sells me a 360. I loved KotOR (both of them), and Jade Empire was great, as well.

Thanks for taking your time and answering all of our questions Grandma! I have a few more that I just came up with:

    1. What is your other biggest interest besides gaming? Do you have a favorite movie?

    2. Is there any chance left for me to add you to my Xbox Live account? Would be cool to play a little Mp with you some day!

Thanks again for your time, and you ARE trulky the coolest grandma ever! :)

Balmung, that's a tough question. 10 years ago was only 1997, and honestly games have gotten a lot better since then. They've become more mature and more complex. Don't get me wrong, there are some great games from that time but things are better now. I don't know if there is any one specific thing I would bring back.

anonymous, I'm not all that special. I bet your grandparents would game a bit if they gave it a chance, but it can be intimidating if they've never done it before.

bakkland, I'm a BioWare fan. I really love what they've done with RPGs before. I'd get the game for that fact alone. But we'll have to see!

anonymous, I started gaming on arcade machines back in the mid 70's and just kept going. I do like the newer stuff I think though.

anonymous, I don't really watch Attack of the Show or X-Play much because I'm usually playing something instead of watching television. I was on Attack of the Show once, so I know how it is, but I don't think they have much to offer that you can't get online or in a magazine anyway.

Braujo, I guess reading would be my main hobby besides gaming nowadays. I used to paint quite a bit but its hard to find space to do anything anymore. I don't really have a favorite movie. Children of Men was really good, I saw that recently.
Send me a friend request! I think there are a few folks on my Friends List that haven't been online for months and months that probably let their subscription run out.

Do you like the Pikmin games?

  • At 9:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

You know, Pikmin is one of those games I never tried. I think the GameCube was floundering with a soft selection of games and it's just one of them that I looked over.

But NOW, GC games are cheap as hell, and the Wii plays damn near all of them. So Pikmin might be something I pick up down the road.

  • At 9:37 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Trust me. They are really good games. Start with Pikmin 1 and then Pikmin 2.

Hi grandma, I was just wondering what u think of the new Wii Blaster and a Wii Wheel for Mario Kart.

Also are you a fan of mario kart, which character did u use in past mario kart games?

  • At 10:20 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I haven't gotten a chance to really see how the Wii blaster feels and I don't know about the wheel for Mario Kart, either. It's not something I can really say I'd use before I try it. I've heard the blaster makes aiming more steady, but some of the buttons are more difficult to reach. I don't know much about wheel yet.

Whenever I play Mario Kart I usually stick to Yoshi or Bowser. I don't know why, it's just what I'm used to!

  • At 10:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

do you ever wish you had gotten into game development? You paint, do you consider yourself a creative person? just wondering.

  • At 10:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I really don't think I'd be very good at it, even back when I painted a lot. It's a lot different from oil painting a portrait to going through what game developers go through. It's a lot harder for them. Things have to be more detailed and consistent I think. I don't think I could do that. It's really amazing what those folks can do.

  • At 11:21 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    o alright
another question : does it ever disappoint you that the vast majority of games these days, regardless of genre, are really just about doing a lot of killing? even the ones with the best stories?
something I think about a lot

  • At 11:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What's disappointing is the how repetitive things get. Look how many WWII games there are. There's a lot of Medal of Honor games and Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms and it's hard for a game developer to be original. As far as death and killing goes, even Katamari Damacy technically has death in it if you think about it. Even in Tetris your turns are numbered as "Lives." Cliche is the word I'm looking for.

But they do this really, really well. Call of Duty 2 was beautiful. Brothers in Arms back on the XBox was actually a complicated strategic game.

There's going to be twice as many Gears of War and Halo type FPS shooters as there are going to be Little Big Planet or Brain Age type games. As long as the games are really GOOD, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

I'd love to see more originality, but that's a lot to ask for. Publishers don't like them. They like whatever has worked before.

    But I don't know, really.

    I just like to play.

  • At 11:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

yeah I know what you mean about publishers just wanting developers to make what sells.
Anyway thanks for bothering to answering these questions

  • At 7:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

A lot of the Sonic games recently have been kind of a disappointment. I'm sorta skeptical about the new ones, but I'll give them a shot.

Braujo, yeah I think they're full but I have to clean it up a bit. There have been people on there I haven't seen online in quite a while.

Nick, nobody really has called me a geek or a nerd to my face as a negative. Whenever it was used to describe me it was more of a welcoming term, like 'yeah, this old lady's a geek like one of us.'

Kevin, I'm pretty used to it. He sets up the camera so it's out of my way, that's all I ask. I need to see the screen to play, I could give a damn about the video when I'm trying to get through something.

Sarah, I would LOVE to go to PAX, but honestly I can't afford to go. Plane tickets, food, hotel, it all adds up, and I just can't do it this year. Maybe next year!

    hello~! i just had a quick question...

how do you feel that Growlanser 5 is coming out for the PS2? Atlus is giving it an American release under the name "Growlanser: Heritage of War", the date of release (unless the change it again) is September 11, 2007...

and as an FYI Manhunt 2 got an AO rating (Adults Only) so if it keeps that rating, Sony and Nintendo will ban the game from there systems. That will leave it as an Xbox360 exclusively... but the makers don't know if they're going to change it or not...

margaret, another Growlanser? Really? I didn't see anything about Working Designs or Gaijinworks bringing it over. I wonder how it will do! A 9-11 release date probably isn't going to help much.

I heard about Manhunt 2's rating. It really confuses me what exactly a game has to do to get the rating that gets it more or less banned from consoles and stores. Do you choke someone a little bit harder? Do you shoot them with bigger bullets? Is there a little bit more skin? How much more skin? Somebody somewhere actually has to figure it out! I want to meet whoever it is.

Grandma, whats youre take on upcoming halo 3 and Assasin's Creed? do you think that they will live up to the hype they are getting? One more thing, do you think consoles are going to keep losing their exclusivity?

I saw you mention The Darkness and wanted to make sure you didn't pass up this amazing game. It's single player story mode was stellar, and if you can get into it, you'll really enjoy it.

PS just found your site through destructoid.com
